FSD Africa is a specialist development agency, whose main aim is to mobilise capital (especially domestic private capital), to provide long-term financing for Africa’s development needs and create systemic change in the financial markets.
FSD Africa is developing a blended finance vehicle designed to unlock both the capital and the skills that green SMEs need to grow and create jobs. This workshop intends to bring the mechanism’s design into direct contact with the market it is built to serve. The mechanism is positioned not only as a financing tool, but as a response to the workforce and skills constraints emerging across Africa’s green economy.
Africa’s E-mobility sector is creating new opportunities for local manufacturing, circular economy, skills development, and green job creation.
Through the Promotion of the “E-Mobility in Kenya programme,” implemented by GIZ in partnership with Siemens Stiftung, as well as Siemens Stiftung’s “Piloting and Preparing to Scale E-Mobility in Kenya programme,” the two organisations have supported innovation, enterprise development, applied research, technical training, and ecosystem collaboration.
The session aims to showcase practical lessons from these initiatives and convene industry, government, innovators, and development partners to discuss how partnerships can accelerate Africa’s e-mobility industry.
Across Africa, the shift towards a climate-resilient and low-carbon economy is opening significant new opportunities for job creation, innovation and inclusive growth – but only if people have access to the skills, training pathways and support systems needed to participate in emerging green sectors. Building on the Flagship Report of the Global Initiative on Jobs and Skills for the New Economy, this session brings together government, industry, TVET institutions and development partners to identify practical strategies for scaling successful green skills initiatives across Africa, strengthening planning, delivery and financing for the green transition.
CGD is hosting a workshop, “Linking Labour Mobility and TVET to Support Green Skills Development in Africa and Abroad.”
The workshop will feature framing presentations from:
- Lukmon Akintola – Co-Organiser, African Non-State Actors Platform for Migration and Development.
- Shadrack Mwadime – Principal Secretary for Labour and Skills Development, Government of Kenya.
- Nomagugu Ncube – Chief of Mission to Kenya, International Organization for Migration; and
- Ruto Lyoba – Managing Director, East Africa Institute of Welding.
Participants will then be invited to share lessons learned from their own experience. In particular, we welcome thoughts on how to ethically and sustainably link green skills development with labour mobility, including how to strengthen TVET institutions to meet international labour mobility needs, and what meaningful investment would look like in practice.
